Lai Takes all Three at U19 Nationals

The 2016 Li-Ning MARS SPORTS U19 Championships have concluded with Victorian Joy Lai dominating finals day. Lai won all three of her finals and in doing so secured her 4th straight girls doubles title, 3rd consecutive girls singles title and 2nd mixed title in a row. Western Australian Ying Lin also put in a strong performance, coming away with the boy’s singles and doubles titles.

Lin and Kai Chen Teoh opened the day’s matches in an all West Australian final. It was Lin who came out the victor in a hard fought two game match, defeating his team mate 21-19 21-17./p>

After pushing Lai to three games in the team event a few days earlier, Tiffany Ho (NSW) was looking go one better against Lai in the girl’s singles final. However Lai was able to control the match, coming away with a 21-13 21-17 win.

Lin was back on court in the boy’s doubles final teaming up with Tyzton Tan (WA) to take on South Australian brothers Tristan and Keith Edison. In what was the closest match of the day the West Australians ran out 21-19 11-21 21-17 winners to give Lin his second title.

In the girl’s doubles final Lai and Ho we back on court, but this time on the same side of the net. They put in a dominant performance to defeat Janet Son and Jodee Vega (NSW) 21-16 21-8.

In the last final of the day Lai and Lin were both still in with a chance to win all three finals, however being on opposite teams meant that only one would succeed in this endeavour. Lai partnered with Justin Lee (NSW), while Lin was paired with Victoria He (NSW). It would be Lai and Lee who came out on top and defended their 2015 title, winning 21-15 21-18.
