Triple De-Lai-te Again for Joy at Australian U15 Nationals

Joy Lai has put in a dominating performance to win all three titles at the Australian U15 National Championships for the second consecutive year. Lai was a level above the rest at the competition, winning all her finals in straight games. While on the boy’s side Huaidong Tang of NSW claimed two titles by way of the boys singles and doubles.

Lai opened the day with comprehensive win in the girls singles over Tiffany Ho of NSW. She controlled the match from start to finish to win 21-9 21-10. In Lai’s second final f the day she joined fellow Victorian Lily Rigg again take on Ho, with partner Janet Son in the girls doubles. Lai and Rigg comfortably won the first games 21-14 before Ho and Son fought back strongly in the second games. The scores were locked at 19-19 before Lai and Rigg held their nerve the better of the pairs to close out the game 21-19.

Tang was also looking win all three titles on final’s day and got off to a strong start in the boys singles against teammate Justin Lee. The first game was a close affair; however Tang always had his nose in front and took the opener 21-19. Lee got out to an early lead in the second games, however soe strong attacking play from Tang saw him work his way back into the lead and close out the match 21-16.

Following the singles Tang and Lee joined forces to take on Tyzton Tan and Ying Xiang Ling of WA. Tang and Lee looked as they would cruise through the match, taking the first game 21-10. The second set was a completely different match, with both sides going point for point. It took 5 match points, but Tang and Lee eventually closed out the second games, winning 25-23.

Going into the mixed doubles Lai and Tang were both looking to make it 3 titles, however someone would be disappointed. Lai teamed with Tan and Tang with Ho, with both partners looking for their first win after losses earlier in the day. While both games were hard fought, it was Lai and Tan who came out winners 21-17 21-17, giving Lai her third title, and Tan his first of the day. Tang would have to settle for two titles, while Ho was perhaps the unluckiest player on the day, unable to claim at title from three attempts.
